Calling All Rogers Park LGBTQ Artists: A Sign of the Times
A new Rogers Park LGBTQ design competition
sponsored by the United Church of Rogers Park will be a key feature of a
project to express our church’s fundamental belief in inclusion and
support for its members and friends in the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual,
Transgender, and Queer communities. The Sign of the Times Marvyn Womack Memorial LGBTQ Rainbow Project
will replace the weatherworn pink triangle currently nailed to the church
sanctuary wall at 1545 W.
Morse Ave, Chicago, IL.
Decades ago, church member Marvyn
Womack led our work to make United Church
a Reconciling
Church (gay
welcoming) in the Methodist denomination. When the pink triangle was
first installed the 1960’s-era gay pride symbol was a brilliant pink
creation and a bold statement in our north side community. It
proclaimed a message of welcome for all to see. However, our triangle
is now a dated and tattered piece of plywood. Today, we look to the
rainbow flag which is now an international symbol of pride and represents
the racial, ethnic, and cultural diversity of our global LGBTQ community.
United
Church is drafting Sign of the Times project guidelines now.
In the meantime, we seek entries from LGBTQ artists in Rogers Park and
Chicago. Start thinking about design and construction specs for a new
permanent, outdoor and weather-proof, rainbow-themed symbol. What
could the new creation look like? Art? Monument? We will
commission construction of the competition’s winning design and plan
to install it during Pride Month 2010. Rogers Park LGBTQs and straight allies are invited to join our
project committee. For more info call the church at 773-761-2500 or
