Why do some presentations of the Word fly while some just dribble down the front of the pulpit and into the aisles? Why do some worship services feel electric and others seem dead-in-the-water? Is it possible to have zoom, zip and zowie…and dignity? This workshop will explore these questions and other resources for worship leaders who want to express their own passion for proclaiming the Gospel while engaging others.
The Rev. Dr. Jana Childers, Dean of the Seminary and Professor of Homiletics and Speech Communication at San Francisco Theological Seminary, has been preaching and writing about preaching for twenty-five years. She appears regularly on Thirty Good Minutes, the television program produced by the Chicago Sunday Evening Club and was recently featured on the Odyssey Channel’s Great Preachers series. In the past couple years, she has preached and taught in Sweden, South Africa, Australia and Korea. Her most recent book is Performing the Word: Preaching as Theatre (Abingdon Press).
