A Love Letter from God

Wednesday Night Bible Study
Note that there will be no study on 23 November [day before Thanksgiving]

In the face of constant political, social and economic injustice most of us are angry, frustrated, and afraid. Our faith is challenged daily and many of us are left with the question, “What of relevance is the Gospel, or the teachings of Jesus today?”

To the evangelical or fundamentalist Christian, the Bible is considered synonymous with “God’s Word.” Studying the scriptures is an effort to know and follow the “one true inerrant meaning” of each verse. For the contemporary biblical scholar, the Bible’s meaning is flexible and can only be understood through the study of historical context and symbolism. Between these two viewpoints lives a poignant chasm of intolerance, and finger pointing; a battle of faith which has continued since the times of the early church. Noticeably absent is a third belief, the view that the Bible is a "living text" accessed primarily through prayer [particularly contemplative prayer or meditation], community action and discourse. Reading the scriptures then becomes an active [and constantly changing] "conversation with God". The scriptures truly become “A Love Letter from God.”

To be hosted by United Church of Rogers Park and long-time member and friend Duffy Poindexter.

Join us Wednesday nights, as we take a deep dive into the gospel teachings of Jesus. Our only tools will be prayer, meditation, deep listening and discussion. Our intention is to explore the gospels as if we are seeing them for the first time.

Every Wednesday at 7:00 pm.
