 Frederick Douglass "Fritz" Pollard

Frederick Douglass "Fritz" Pollard was the son of John Pollard. Frederick was the most known of the Pollard children. After playing at Lane Tech High School, Fritz played football briefly for Northwestern, Harvard, and Dartmouth. In 1915, he received a Rockefeller scholarship to attend Brown University (Providence, R.I.) At Brown, Fritz was one of two blacks enrolled in the school. He played the first African American head coach in the National Football League. Pollard along with Bobby Marshall were the first two African American players in the NFL in 1920. Football pioneer Walter Camp ranked Pollard as "one of the greatest runners these eyes have ever seen." Later he became the first black man to play in the Rose Bowl. In 2005, "Fritz" Pollard became the first black head coach to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
